Clauberg Presentation Grade Model 1850 Staff & Field Officers Sword

American Civil War


32" slightly curved single edged blade with a 21" stopped median fuller. Blade 1.1" wide at ricasso. Overall length 38" with a 6" hilt. Cast gilt brass guard with foliate themes and US in the face, with Eagle Head quillon and engraved decorations on the interior of the guard. Chased gilt brass pommel cap with an American Eagle, and mount for a jewel (missing) in the top of the cap, surrounded by smaller colored glass "jewels". Reverse ricasso with the Clauberg maker mark. Blade decorated with etched foliate, patriotic and martial themes, with an intertwined US on the reverse and the shield of Columbia on the obverse. Etched decorations are highlighted with gold wash. Spine etched IRON PROOF. Grooved German silver grip with 10 wraps of twisted wire. Sword is accompanied by a heavy German silver scabbard with chased gilt brass mounts featuring patriotic and martial themes with two suspension rings mounted on the two middle mounts.

Condition
Good. Blade could use a light and careful cleaning. It retains some polish and much of the gilt wash with most of the etched decorations intact. Blade with some surface crust and roughness near the tip. Guard with strong traces of gilt remaining. Grip somewhat loose, guard loose as well. Jewel missing from pommel cap, as well as some of the surrounding stones. Scabbard with traces of gilt on the mounts and showing tarnish and some wear.
